The series also provides a rather thorough examination of the idea of The Power of Friendship, and arguably also how it compares/contrasts with how it was handled in the previous series: In the original series, Yugi and his companions' friendship was rooted heavily in both previous connections to each other, their own personal desire to improve as individuals (Joey and Tristan moving away from being bullies, Joey becoming a duelist to help improve his lot in life and to help his sister, Tea wanting to support her friends and work towards her dreams, Yugi wanting real friends, etc.), and ultimately driven by the overarching need to help Atem discover his identity and the past that is connected to him and the Millenium Items
